Press Reader
Press Reader gives the ability to read any of over a thousand newspapers and magazines from more a hundred countries and in over thirty languages on your computer...
To register, you must:
On the left, you can select items from different countries - there are currently 530 from the UK, 386 from Australia, 450 from France and 697 from the US, but nearly every country is represented...
Alternatively, you can choose different languages - the majority are in English, but there are 547 in French, 374 in German, 152 in Italian and 814 in Spanish. Again, almost all languages are represented...
Finally, the "Category" heading lets you choose what subject material you are looking for - whether it be Boating, History, Sports or Travel, there should be something that will take your fancy! Newspapers are, not surprisingly, in the "News" section.
So if you want a computer magazine in English, click on "Computers and Technology" then click on "Languages" and then on "English"..
One point that initially confused me is that, as the site is designed for people using tablets and smart phones, you move up and down lists by clicking the mouse on the list and dragging it up or down, rather than clicking on the scroll bar...
At this stage, clicking on a magazine or newspaper should bring up a view of the first page, and you can then move through it. At the bottom of the screen is an index which lets you jump to particular sections or articles. If there is a box round an article headline, clicking there should remove the pictures and give you a text-only version, which you may find easier to read...
Click here for part two on how to download items to your laptop/tablet/smartphone so that you can read them away from the internet...
